Vanitas

Vanitas began as meditation on light—presenting subtle relationships of shadow, color, contour and shape at different times of the day—but developed into a deeper exploration of portraiture in film.

Individual sitters appear in scenes inspired by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and still life paintings of the 17th-century 'Vanitas' genre, which often showcased collections of objects conveying achievement, pleasure and the inevitability of death.

The featured subjects, themselves artists from different disciplines, discuss their most prized possessions in unexpected and diverse ways, ultimately leaving us to question: What do our possessions say about us and how do we want to be remembered?
